Flying Colors, Indeed.

Yesterday's word was: disgruntled. Dawn-- I'm starting to be impressed. No pressure. :)

So you know what metaphor I really like? "flying colors" I mean first off, it means someone did something great... but it creates such great mental images, too.

I mean, lets think about it for a while... Sure, at first notion you might just think of something boring like some flags flying.

But if you ponder it long enough, you start to realize it could be some parallel bars of color zooming through the air....

Like a deadly attack rainbow.
Or better yet parallel bars of colors with wings!

A deadly attack rainbow with razor sharp wings!
Or with Capes!
And the CareBears thought *they* had a Rescue Rainbow.
Maybe all the colors are actually super heroes!!

ERMAHGERD!!!
Flying Colors, indeed.
Reading Rainbow!!!

Yep, I did just make an image for that lame pun.

Rainbow Connections

Two of my most favorite things have been joined together.

But I can't post the video here so you should follow the link... to see Darren Criss and Kermit duet-ing on "The Rainbow Connection"

Today in my writer's group the two guys were not agreeing on anything, and one of them suggested they were like an angel and devil on my shoulder... and then he, of course, claimed the angel spot.

The other protested and I said, "Well, you are wearing black."

He said, "Gray! And look, I have a rainbow on!" (He was wearing a Pink Floyd t-shirt.)

I was totally convinced.

Then the first guy called him a Care Bear because he was upset to be ousted from the angel position... which, now that I think about it, wouldn't actually do anything to knock the one wearing a rainbow out of the angel spot.

I'm pretty sure neither of them know how much I love rainbows... but if he did, the angel totally played me like a fiddle.

Angels can be tricksy.

Btw, it's completely delightful to have two people trying to convince me of their arguments by making funny faces and silently mocking while the other person is talking. How I love a good rapport!

Tomorrow I really need to start the process of packing.... whoo hoo. :/

I think packing would be a lot more fun if I could only put things of the same color in a box.... but man would that take a long time!

Dreamboat

I have amazing nail polish. It's pink... but it's also a rainbow. I'm not even joking. I bought it because I saw pictures, but when I got it, I thought it wouldn't be cause the bottle just makes it look like glittery pink, but then you put it on your nails and this is what it looks like:

http://theposhpolish.blogspot.com/2011/08/nfu-oh-62.html

 Hot diggity dog!!

Seriously I use the slang of my grandmother's generation. *and I don't even mean to.* I referred to someone as a dreamboat the other day.... only it was in my head, which means that it wasn't ironic cause you aren't normally ironic when you are just thinking to yourself. No, I just actually think he's a dreamboat.

Dreamboat... how is that even supposed to be a good thing. Like dreamy I get, but dreamboat? Apparently it's from a song "When My Dream Boat Comes Home" -a 1936 song credited to Guy Lombardo.

Thanks youtube:

I kinda like music from the 30's...and not just because I was in a WWII musical review show once upon a time.

I also like Michael Buble dancing on top of refrigerator units and shelves...

This music video revives this song for me. Someone pointed out how well it actually works to talk about an unborn baby, and that's all I've been able to associate with it, since. But now I can also associate awesome supermarket shenanigans with it.

Michael Bublé is a dreamboat.

Like a tween loves Beiber

I think it might be time to break out the fall slipper socks. They are these lovely thick wool socks that my mother in law gave me once upon a time... I think possibly before she was my mother in law. They are rainbow specked with a black base and they keep my feet warm but not sweaty like slippers do. I can't handle slippers because of the sweaty feet factor. :s Eww.

Three things in my life were constant when it came to my mom while I was growing up: Magnets, Iced Tea, and Slippers.

I barely own any magnets, I like tea but almost never make it... in fact I melted my tea pitcher.

See? It now has two pour spouts and the lid doesn't fit on it... Turns out they actually mean it when they say don't put it in the dishwasher. Who knew?!?

And I actively dislike slippers. But I've never liked having things on my feet... my feet get really hot sometimes. Have I told you about me and footie pajamas? Back when I was an adorable tyke my mom had to cut the feet off my footie pajamas, because if she didn't I would unzip them and take my legs out of them during the night. So in the morning I'd be walking around with just the arms in my pjs... like I had a long sleeved, foot-ied cape. Suddenly this sounds like a story in my Early reader... I should probably add a chapter.

PS I stepped on a needle and poked a hole in my big toe when looking for my camera to take a picture of my melted tea pitcher. I hope you appreciate the lengths I go to for you. I knew I lost a needle yesterday. Oh well, at least I stepped on it and not a guest of my house.

Guest of my house. Who talks like that?

me.

You know what I would really like to find, but have pretty much given up on? A white sweater with little tiny rainbow flecks. Basically a funfetti sweater, like the one the girl is wearing here:

Also pictured: Actual funfetti.

I know- not the greatest of pictures: Here's another that I found:

Also pictured: Ginormo belt and tree stump

It's a pretty 70's thing I think, but come on-- It's so me!

It's also very hard to google... which means it's hard to find in real life, too. But I love it. I love it like a tween loves Beiber.

And that's saying something.

Chinese Rainbow story, or: Get Some Flippin' Gumption!

Three books read in 2 days... plus a children's picture book written (it's not good but at least I've written something, so I've gotten my feet wet and now don't have to be intimidated.) I've also watched 4 episodes of Gilmore Girls, discovered their brilliant notion of S'moreos in a deleted scene and read far too many folk tales.

I read this evening the Chinese tale of how the rainbow came to be... and it's kooky, lemme tell ya.

Apparently a girl's father dressed her up and had her pretend to be a boy so she could go to school. Oh yeah and there was this boy, who was the same age and their fathers were friends, so they became friends, too. So they went to school and grew up together, and all the while he thought she was a boy. (Hey! It's Yentle!) And of course the girl eventually fell in love with the boy but was afraid to tell him. Then her father died and her sister-in-law arranged a marriage for the girl and made her come home. So the disguised girl went home but not before singing a song to the boy about how she is actually a girl and wants to marry the boy. He is a numbskull, apparently, cause he didn't get it, and basically says, "Ha! See ya next term, buddy!"

So then she went home and eventually the boy missed his pal, so he went to his friend's house to visit and found out his pal was actually a girl-- and then he discovers a whole bunch of love letters she'd written him, but he couldn't see her as she was in isolation before her marriage so basically he stopped eating and died.  The girl heard the news and was devastated and on the day of her wedding the girl made the processional stop at the boy's grave and cried a whole lot and then said to the grave- "If we were supposed to be man and wife, open up" --and the grave did, she jumped in and it closed up again.

Now, dude who was supposed to marry the girl was understandably ticked off so what does he do? He has them dig up the boy's coffin. But the only thing inside were 2 white stones.. which they threw into the road cause they were so mad, but where they threw them, 2 shoots of bamboo immediately sprang up... and then they cut those down (at the same time) and then the stems "flew up to heaven" to become the rainbow... and the boy is red and the girl is blue (which seems kinda stupid since those colors are nowhere close to each other.)

If this were a European folk tale, the only people dying woud be the sister-in-law and the mean guy who was gonna marry the girl despite the fact she loved someone else. Oh China! I mean homeboy doesn't even try to save the girl from this marriage... he just finds out that she's a girl, finds the letters, and mopes himself to death.  And for this he gets to become a rainbow?! Bah.

I think Europeans prized gumption a little more than the Chinese did back in the era of folk tales.

Confession

Hello, My name is Renée and I have a problem... Well, three, actually.

One: I have a headache.
Two: I'm highly addicted to rainbows
Three: I've got a nail polish... thang.

Now if you are thinking that I'm blogging at 10:15 just to put off cleaning and in the hopes that the Excedrine I took will start to work and my headache will go away so that I can use my nail polish and thereby continue to avoid cleaning... well... good on you. You are so right.  Plus, today my brain was working at the pace of, as a dear preacher of mine was wont to say, molasses in January, so I'd rather like to write ye olde blogge early tonight so that when the mood strikes I can hie away to bed, and not worry about concerning you all with no blog post. I know how much you'd miss me.

Anyway back to the nail polish. I recently purged my nail polish so 'sceptin' for about 5 bottles of clear nail polish that roam wild and free in my apartment the picture above shows my collection.... That's only... 18 bottles... uhhhh did I mention I have a problem? Well, look at it this way... it's cheaper than my eyeshadow addiction which I've quit cold turkey. (not the wearing of, the purchasing of)

You know what I like about nail polish, besides the colors? The names... For instance, today I bought nail polish called, Magic (bronze), Strapless (sparkly blue), Free Spirit (spring green) and Unzip Me (yellow). Now can you tell me why those colors are called those things?? Yeah, me either. I wanna get paid to just come up with suggestive/happy words and make nail polish names!

Yes, I did just buy the polish today because I felt I needed to round out my color options... and yes I know I still need to buy a proper orange and a purple. See problem number 2.

Ok, ok I'll go and try to do some cleaning.. or maybe I'll investigate making some of Pioneer Woman's iced coffee... That sounds like a reasonable alternative, right?

P.S. The beginnings of Pioneer Woman's iced coffee look more like primordial ooze than the start of a yummy drink...

Color Me Home

Need to be: doing laundry, putting laundry away, packing an overnight bag, doing work on the video game, cleaning... Oy vey, do I need to be cleaning...

Am actually doing: having a 26 comment long conversation with my sister on my facebook status, generally perusing fb, playing with a macbook, considering watching another Pushing Daisies episode on Netflix, reading a book, or playing a videogame, pondering why I love rainbows so gosh darn much.

I think the reason I love rainbows so much is this: they make me happy. Ok, yes, perhaps an obvious point, but here is the thing. I think rainbows look really beautiful and I like that all the colors are together... but also somewhere inside of me rainbows are synonymous with joy. Maybe I watched too much children's television as a child, maybe I got hit over the head with a Lisa Frank brick, maybe I was brainwashed by Willy Wonka, but to me a rainbow is a symbol of hope, happiness, contentment and, yes, joy.

Plus one of my favorite movies ever has a song sung to a rainbow, so that probably means something.
And somewhere in the movie Mr. Pendergast says to Polly, "Who could be sad when you have a rainbow around your neck?"  and puts a crystal prism on a necklace on her.

I will totally let you watch this movie with me if you want... in fact if you are my friend and you haven't watched this movie with me I'm totally shocked... It's nigh on required friendship viewing. It's like a childhood cult classic, only it was only released on TV so it's a sneaky childhood cult classic.

By the way I'm really holding back on all the videos I want to link on here now... so if you have some free time watch Sweet Little Angel Eyes, and Stand Up, and Nothin' on Me, and Something More... Oh heck, let's just watch it!

Pinteresting

Today, I had a "business" meeting and then I worked on a video game for a few hours. And when I say "worked on a video game" I mean that I literally worked on one, not played one. I think this is incredibly awesome sauce.

Several people have mentioned lately that I didn't have any plates on my new car (though I have a temporary dealer's permit, so don't you worry about me being illegal.) Enough people (read: both a mom and a dad) mentioned it to me that I started to get paranoid that I had misunderstood what I needed to do, and I was just frittering away my 30 days trusting to the universe to work everything out, when I needed to be taking action. So today I took action, and e-mailed the lady who I originally spoke to about the new plates and all. :Side note: Yes, I do love the world in which I live, where I can send a digital letter rather than calling someone on the phone. Hooray for e-mails bringing written correspondence back into vogue. :End side note: Anyway the lady e-mailed me back and reassured me that I would be getting everything in the mail that I would need other than my updated insurance card (got that last week!) and my personal property tax receipt from last year. Check! So my mind was put back at ease. And then when I came home, lo and behold, there it all was in the mail. My e-mail trumped the universe attempting to reassure me.

Also, my dear friend Melissa has introduced me to this website called "Pinterest." It's ridiculously addicting to me. It's basically an online "idea book" or bulletin board. If you come across something you really like you "pin" it to your wall(s) You can have several categories, including fashion, food, decoration, ect. Also you can see what other people are pinning, and browse the most  popular things to re-pin to your wall. My problem is that there is a waiting list to join, so while I wait I have a browser that is just full of pages I want to pin, but can't because I don't have a wall to pin it to.  I will be wasting hours and hours and hours... and hours. Why you ask? Because you can find pictures like this:

Which I find both stunning as an image and desirous as a future architectural detail/inspiration. Yes, Please!

Then you scroll down the page about an inch and find
Do I really need to explain any further why I heart this website? It's used by my people... my kindred... my heart mates.

... at least visually speaking.

Rainbows

Oh.

My.

Gosh.

How could I have forgotten to show you this?

IT'S A RAINBOW CAKE!!!!

If you want to know more about it, go here.

I know, this kind of cake has taken the internet by storm, and I'm just now discovering it.. but seriously... Have you ever seen a prettier cake? The answer you are looking for, my friend, is no.

I know my love of rainbows borders on obsessive... but seriously... they are so pretty.

Rainbows make me happy-- To paraphrase one of my favorite movies- How can anyone be sad when they have a rainbow?

You know what a rainbow means? It means the storm has ended and light is coming back into the world. I can't see how that could be a bad thing.
