Sad panda is sad

Another really great day- though I must say that I'm super tired from all the birthday extravaganza.

Also, those girls in Maurices know how to sell clothes.

... Don't want Kara to go 'way. :(

I might be sad panda in snow tomorrow....

... So the problem with friends who really like to quote internet memes, is that you start quoting them too, without actually knowing the reference...

... and then you try to figure out the reference by searching sad panda in snow...

but you don't even know what to use as a search term when "sad panda in snow" doesn't turn anything up...

Here's the "Sad panda" meme... which I also knew nothing about...

.. and I guess anyone's sadder when they are in snow?

or maybe "in snow" is another meme that is colliding with the sad panda meme??

I have no idea, but I know what a sad panda is.

  1. Worse than that, I had to look up "meme."

  2. Oh, wow. I am excited to get to explain this. There was a webcomic ~2001 called "Megatokyo" that reached epic popularity. Some consider this the golden age of webcomics, when they started getting to have booths at Comic Con and makeing actual money and such.

There was a famous split between the two authors, with the one who drew the comic taking over the storyline. At this point it became less monsters-attack-Tokyo and more Several-Magical-Girls-Help-Depressive-Boy-Overcome-Himself. Many fans were severely irritated, but the webcomic continued to snowball in popularity. You can buy the books now in Barnes & Noble.

Anyway, a running joke in the comic was that drawing Sad Girls in Snow was the Depressive Protagonists' forte and sort of took him to his happy place. You can actually buy a "sad girl in snow" blanket from the comic store. From the FAQs:

#C11: What do sad girls in snow have to do with anything?
The "Sad Girl in Snow" drawing was originally mentioned in strip [75], and finally shown in strip [374]. However, it was the MacHall guest strip [142] that popularized the term. After being parodied by several other webcomics, it has since become a cliché all its own. Of course, Fred only popularized the term "Sad Girl in Snow", snow has symbolized sadness in manga and anime for a long time."

Sad Panda In Snow is riffing off of that meme.

And now you know what I learned in college.
